The Councillor for Enoggera Ward asked me to consult with a local school in the hopes of repainting a crumbling local mural. Brisbane City Council built the concrete structure at Newmarket as an air raid shelter in 1942. At the corner of Banks Street and Enoggera Road, it now functions as a bus stop.
Newmarket State School neighbours the shelter, and it was essential to get the student body involved. At the client's request the mural featured Newmarket landmarks: the chimney, pool, school, Banks Street Reserve and a view of the Brisbane skyline at night. I had a few school children join me to paint during their last week of term. It was important that each of them owned a little piece of the painting we created together.
